When I walked into the National Corvette Museum the afternoon of October 19 and took a look at the seven bright and shiny new 2020 Corvettes waiting for delivery on Corvette Boulevard, I quickly realized that all seven of these beautiful Corvettes were Hard Top Convertibles (HTCs).

One HTC soon captured my attention as I noticed it was not only Torch Red with a Torch Red roof and Torch Red nacelles, but it was also adorned with Torch Red vents all around. I was hopeful that this Corvette’s new owners would take delivery the following day and that I would have a chance to visit with them about their fabulous new HTC.

    Santa's New Sleigh is a 2020 Corvette!

My friends, Ken and Diane Berg, had invited me to participate in the delivery of their new Rapid Blue HTC scheduled for October 20. Our mutual friends, Karen and David Bedell, were also scheduled to take delivery of their Rapid Blue HTC that day, making the day even more exciting and special. I didn’t think the day could get even better, but it did. After arriving at the NCM that morning, I noticed a license plate had been added to the Torch Red HTC that had drawn my attention the day before. In large letters the plate read “HOHOHO” and before I had even met the new owners, I wondered if this might very well be Santa and Mrs. Claus’ new sleigh!

    Santa's New Sleigh is a 2020 Corvette!

It wasn’t long before a jolly looking fellow sporting a flowing white beard appeared with his wife and an NCM delivery specialist for a review of the features of the most technically advanced sleigh Santa Clause has ever owned. Yes, as luck would have it, I was there when Santa and Mrs. Claus took delivery of their new Torch Red HTC Corvette!

Santa recently shared that “last year, when the new C8 Corvette was revealed, Mrs. Claus watched the show with me. At the end, I looked at her and said ‘Santa needs a new sleigh!’ She said, ‘Well, if Santa can figure out how to pay for it, we’ll see what we can do’. After some ‘resource and asset allocations’, Santa and Mrs. Claus picked up their ‘New Sleigh’ at the National Corvette Museum in October, just in time for the Holiday Season. Another example of wishes and dreams coming true if you believe in them and work hard to achieve them.”

    Santa's New Sleigh is a 2020 Corvette!

Mr. and Mrs. Claus are go by the aliases “Walter and Karen” where they live in New Hampshire when they aren’t at the North Pole. But with a beard like that, it’s hard to really hide anywhere. As a result, Walter has had the honor of being Santa Claus for all of the local children, both young and old alike, for the last 20 years.

“It has been truly rewarding listening to the wishes and dreams of so many children over those years. There have been some funny conversations and some serious ones during my brief interactions. During one visit about 15 years ago, a ‘senior’ child sat on Santa’s lap to whisper her earnest wishes. I asked her, ‘So, little girl, what do you want for Christmas?’ She looked up at me and smiled and said ‘Santa, I am 96 years old, and I would like to live to be 100 years old!’ Well, I stammered and finally said, ‘That is a very big wish, but I will see what I can do.’ She said ‘Thank you, I’ll come back if I make it’. She did come back four years later, and we had a nice visit. She lived to be 103 years old and was lucid and bright to the end. Once again, it just goes to show that wishes and dreams can come true if you believe in them.”

Santa told me that this has been a very different year for him, just as it has been for all of us. He has worked hard to spread as much cheer as he possibly could. Social distancing and mask requirements have made sharing holiday traditions more difficult, but he and Mrs. Claus continue to share in holiday traditions as much as possible. He also shared that last week’s winter storm brought as much as 46 inches of snow to some areas. Following the storm, a very important last-minute delivery came up. With all of the snow, you might wonder if Santa was able to make the delivery. Well, this is Santa Claus, and like he always does, Santa arrived just in time in his bright red Mid-Engine Corvette HTC sleigh!

I asked Santa if he had anything else that he’d like to share before he, Mrs. Claus, and all of the elves made final preparations for Christmas Eve deliveries all around the world. Santa replied, “I truly enjoy sharing my experiences with this wonderful car, and especially the smiles it puts on people’s faces. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!”

Maybe, if you’re lucky, you’ll see Santa delivering presents in his new sleigh, a bright red 2020 Corvette HTC.

    Merry Christmas!

[PIC] C8 Corvette Rendered with Round Taillights Looks Plain Jane

Remember the fuss when Chevy revealed the C7 Corvette and the taillights weren’t round?

You’d have thought someone had spit in Zora’s eye!

Well, earlier this week, a fellow named Andrew Switch Lanez – who bills himself as a former hardware engineer at Cisco Systems who is studying robotics engineering at Naval Postgraduate School – decided to use his artistic talents to appease those traditionalists who believe all Corvettes are not only red but they also have circular lights on the rear end.

He posted this rendering on Facebook after someone in Corvette Enthusiasts asked him to graft a C6 or C7 rear bumper onto the eighth generation mid-engine Corvette. Instead, he used a hybrid of the two designs as found on the Genovation GXE electric C7 Corvette. That explains the custom vanity tag and the fact there are no exhaust ports on this car!

I don’t know about you, but it just looks mighty dull – like that girl you asked to the eighth-grade square dance. She may have a great personality, but after seeing the drop-dead gorgeous girl everyone was drooling over, you just don’t want to dance with Plain Jane anymore. In short, round lights just don’t do justice to the ultra-modern, hip Stingray.

After seeing the forward-thinking rear end (is that an oxymoron?) created by Chevy’s talented group of designers for their new supercar, this retro treatment just doesn’t live up to all the hype of a car that is competing against the likes of Ferraris and Lamborghinis, does it?

The round lights really look great on a C6, but sometimes great design deserves to be left in the past. This is a prime example.

And speaking of designs of the past, there was talk in some circles about reviving the split window on the C7 and C8, but every rendering we’ve seen just doesn’t look nearly as good as the original ’63. We especially dislike those aftermarket spines that look really goofy on C5s and C6s. The C8 does pay homage to the split window styling cue in its own way, though, with body lines moving from the frunk across the roof and to the Stingray emblem on the back, with the V8 engine under the hatch serving as “the body” of the Stingray.

What do you think? Should some enterprising businessman quickly produce new rear ends for the C8, complete with round lamps? We think not.

  • [PICS] C8 Corvette Coupe vs Convertible Headroom…And The Winner Is?

[PICS] C8 Corvette Coupe vs Convertible Headroom...And The Winner Is?

Discussions regarding the 2020 C8 Corvette’s legroom and headroom have been ongoing since the 7.18.19 Next Generation Corvette Reveal in Tustin, California. I was fortunate enough to have been invited to the Reveal by Mike Furman, and was able to be among the first in the public to actually sit in both the driver and passenger seats that night.

One thing I could immediately tell was that photographs don’t do a very good job conveying the space afforded to the driver and the passenger. Both felt more spacious to me when actually sitting inside the car. As the interior space discussions commenced, many also wondered how well a taller individual would fit inside the cockpit. We’ve since seen and heard from many who are over six feet tall and the headroom is actually quite impressive due to the high degree of seat adjustability.

During my C8 Owners School in June, there were two owners who were over six feet tall. While they both said they normally had plenty of headroom in the C8, they also both indicated that the headroom while wearing a helmet was quite restrictive at their height. It was around the same time that I heard Spring Mountain’s Ron Fellows Performance Driving School might be adding convertible C8s for use in the C8 Owners School for the purpose of improved headroom for taller drivers. During my second C8 Owners School with Mike Furman and 16 of his customers in early October, I again heard that HTCs were being ordered by Spring Mountain for the benefit of additional headroom.

After hearing another report on a YouTube video stating that the HTC actually provides less headroom than the coupe, I decided to take matters into my own hands and measure the headroom in both the C8 Coupe and HTC. The following photographs reveal the truth…and the winner is?

COUPE – Seat Fully Forward, Fully Reclined

[PICS] C8 Corvette Coupe vs Convertible Headroom...And The Winner Is?

    HTC – Headroom View

[PICS] C8 Corvette Coupe vs Convertible Headroom...And The Winner Is?

HTC FTW! And for those in need of interpretation, that’s Hard Top Convertible For The Win!

You can clearly see that the design of the coupe limits the headroom due to the required hardware for securing the Targa top. The practical outcome is an additional two inches of headroom in the HTC. The HTC’s additional headroom is a huge win for taller drivers, especially so during track use when helmets are required.

    HTC FTW!

[PICS] 2020 Corvette Wearing Vertini RFS1.9 Custom Wheels Finished in Brushed Dual Gunmetal

So I was cruising the ‘gram earlier today looking for a suitable subject for #WheelsWednesday when I came across this photo of a Black 2020 Corvette wearing Vertini custom forged wheels.

What struck me about the Vertini RFS1.9 forged wheels is how the spokes resemble blades of a turbine. That design gives the feeling of the Corvette being in motion even while standing still.

I also like the choice of color from the owner (@markoon13). Vertini calls this Brushed Dual Gunmetal and it helps add color to the Black Stingray without going to bright silver or chromies.

    Vertini RFS1.9

The Vertini RSF1.9 wheels are made using the latest German manufacturing process that stretching the wheels with pressurized rollers to the desired sizes. Vertini says the process creates a “lightweight multi-spoke wheels with pleasing aesthetics and aggressive fitments for European, Asian, and American vehicles.” Three levels of concave profiles are available. Two colors are offered with Brushed Dual Bronze joining the Brushed Dual Gunmetal.

The RFS1.9 wheels on this Corvette Stingray are staggered 19×8.5 fronts and 20×11 rears and they each cost $325 and $470 respectively.

Here’s the original post from Vertini Wheels:

  • [VIDEO] Track Attack Canada Compares the C8 Corvette vs Lamborghini Huracan 580-2

[VIDEO] Track Attack Canada Compares the C8 Corvette vs Lamborghini Huracan 580-2

By now, seemingly everyone on Planet Earth knows how great the new 2020 Corvette Stingray is.

But is Chevy’s hot new mid-engine ‘Vette a true supercar?

Colin Caissie of Track Attack Canada recently set out to find out for himself when he pitted the all-new C8 against a 2016 Lamborghini 580-2 in a variety of tests.

Despite giving up about 100 horsepower to the V10 Lambo and at a third of the cost (the Lambo cost $240,000), the Corvette was able to emerge as the winner in several portions of the competition and kept it close in the losses.

[VIDEO] Track Attack Canada Compares the C8 Corvette vs Lamborghini Huracan 580-2

For example, in the Timed Auto Slalom Run, the Corvette won with a time of 41.35 versus the 41.56 of the Huracan.

The Lamborghini rebounded to win the Standing Quarter Mile and the Roll Race, though the difference was tight in both cases.

To conclude the competition, the Corvette rallied to record the best Timed Hot Lap at 1:16.9, nearly a second faster than the Huracan’s 1:17.8.

“I’m pretty excited – that’s pretty cool,” said Matt Stokes, GM Canada Marketing Segment Manager, who attended a showing of the videos recapping the competition. “That’s a big car to take down, and for this to be the first model year and technically the base model of the C8 – to be competing at a level like that, and not only compete but taking down a Lamborghini, it shows how truly impressive this car is.”

[VIDEO] Track Attack Canada Compares the C8 Corvette vs Lamborghini Huracan 580-2

Caissie, who drove the cars during the competition, agreed.

“This is a very, very impressive sports car,” he said of the Stingray, which was equipped with the Z51 performance package.

“In the Lamborghini’s defense, though, the brakes did start to die not even two laps into my hot laps, so the data we recorded (earlier) did show the Lambo was quite a bit quicker than the Corvette,” he added. “But unfortunately with them dying so quickly, you can’t pull time out if you can’t use the brakes.”

That being said, however, Caissie admitted that the overall outcome was a testament to the Corvette.

“We did quite a few hot laps with the Corvette,” he said. “We drove around all day filming, and you know what, this thing was a champ. Not at any point throughout the day did it show any signs of wear and tear, brake fading, like nothing. The car held up to everything we put it through and just smiled the whole while doing it and obviously put down an impressive time as well.”

[VIDEO] Track Attack Canada Compares the C8 Corvette vs Lamborghini Huracan 580-2

Still, Caissie says he’s not “super convinced” that the new Corvette is really a supercar, though he conceded as a performance sports car, “this thing is King of the Hill. I’m convinced bang for the buck, this thing is the way to go.”

Overall, he believes the Z51 is “pretty much the ultimate sports car on Planet Earth right now. For what you pay and what you get, there simply is not a better value.”

Perhaps Caissie is reluctant to raise the entry-level model of the Corvette to such lofty status.

“In my opinion, this is not a true supercar … not yet,” he said.

Like so many of us, he remains curious to see what the Z06 and other higher-performance models will be like, and they “might change my mind,” he concedes.

  • [VIDEO] Corvette Assembly Plant Running Ahead of Target Production Schedule

[VIDEO] Corvette Assembly Plant Running One Week Ahead of Target Production

Our friend Morgan Crosbie who is a Chevy sales rep at Ontario’s Finch Chevrolet has a new video up on his Cars and Crosbie YouTube Channel today and while the main thrust is to offer a comparison of the 2020 Corvette 1LT vs his personal loaded 3LT Z51 Coupe. But before he gets into that, he offers some much welcome updates on the production of his customer cars at the Corvette Assembly Plant.

Morgan tells is that the 1LT Coupe behind him is VIN 3963 and it was produced some two weeks ago. With the quality control holds shortened now, Morgan says he is happy to see many of the details have been fine-tuned and that they are ironing out some of the kinks as had been reported previously.

He is also very excited as his customer cars that had a Target Production Week (TPW) of July 13 have already been produced, which means that the Assembly Plant is running a a week ahead of schedule in terms of producing the vehicles they determined were going to be produced at a later date. As a representative of Chevrolet, he is happy to be able to report to his customers that their cars were already built.

[VIDEO] Corvette Assembly Plant Running Ahead of Target Production Schedule

From there, Morgan offers a walk-around of the 1LT car which he calls a “stylish cruiser” as it doesn’t have the Z51 option. In fact, the Arctic White Stingray has just two options, the Sterling Silver Trident wheels and the NPP Performance exhaust. He also calls the Arctic White a “value” color as there is no upcharge for the paint.

Morgan also points out the fact that the non-Z51 cars come with the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires which he says will be more durable and should last longer than the Pilot Sport 4S summer tires found on the Z51 models.

The Chevy sales rep is also quick to point out that for customers who do get the base model, you are no way making any a sacrifices that are too monumental for you to think that its a different vehicle from the upper-level trim and performance models that are being tested by the auto magazines and tv shows. During his walk-around, he points out many of the value details that don’t detract from the Corvette ownership experience.

As always, Morgan offers a solid review so check out the full video if you are looking to build you own “value cruiser.”

From Cars and Crosbie via YouTube:

In this episode I show you the value that you get in a base model Corvette and why it is important to have a corvette specialist to help you design and order your Corvette.

  • The Best Crossovers for 2020

Crossover utility vehicles are still the number one choice for many car buyers in 2020. These softer SUVs are something that is driving the market right now. Everyone likes these easy-to-drive vehicles with a higher seating height and generous cargo room. There are numerous models now that offer seating for seven or eight passengers, offering further challenges to the minivan market out there.

The simple fact of the matter is that crossovers sell. Because of this, automakers are making a lot of them. Because there are so many of these vehicles on the market, it can be difficult to know what crossover utility vehicle or CUV is right for you.

To help, I’ve pulled together a list of the best CUVs on the market today. I’ve driven just about all of them at one time or another, so I have a good feel for what works, what doesn’t, and which ones are actually worth your hard-earned dollars.

I have to note that not all of the vehicles listed below are new designs for 2020. Many of the vehicles came out last year or the years before that. The fact that they still get listed here when such new good models are coming out all the time is a testament to their prowess in the field. I also have to note that I haven’t included luxury crossovers here. I’ll leave that to another article.

    2020 Honda CR-V

    2020 Honda CR-V Touring

The first crossover I’d plop my money down to buy is the Honda CR-V. The CR-V has a long history of sitting at the top of the heap for the five-passenger crossover crowd. The CR-V is an excellent vehicle for a variety of people, which is what makes it so enticing. You get generous cargo room, seating for five, good fuel economy, and excellent driving characteristics for a reasonable price.

Honda offers the CR-V with front or all-wheel drive and either a 190 hp turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine or a hybrid system that puts out 212 hp total. The gasoline-powered CR-V managed 27 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. The hybrid version manages 40 mpg city and35 mpg highway. Pair that kind of power and efficiency with some of the best handling capabilities of any crossover and a starting price of $25,050, and you have a true winner.

    2020 Mazda CX-5

    2020 Mazda CX-5

The only crossover that’s the same size as the CR-V that can best it when it comes to driving characteristics is the Mazda CX-5. Mazda has been killing it lately with its portfolio of smart, economical and fun-to-drive crossovers, and the CX-5 is the best of the entire lineup. It offers a comfortable and elegant interior design and fit and finish better than most of the competitors. It also uses higher quality materials in most areas. The only downside is that some folks aren’t thrilled with the company’s infotainment system, though I actually like it better than the competition (except for Kia who really has it down).

Mazda offers the CX-5 in front or all-wheel drive with either a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 187 hp or a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine that makes 227 hp. If you have a need for speed, you’d better get the turbo. Its 227 hp is much more impressive and it makes a strong 320 lb-ft of torque. You’re looking at 25 mpg city and 31 mpg highway for the base engine and 22 mpg city and 27 mpg highway for the upgraded engine. The CX-5 has a starting price of $25,190, which is very reasonable and right on par with the competition.

    2020 Subaru Forester

    Subaru Forester

Over the past several years two things about the Subaru Forester have been true. It keeps getting bigger, and more people grow to love it. It’s easy to see why. The vehicle offers a fantastic, easy-to-live-with package. Equipped with plenty of modern technology like Subaru’s suite of driver assistance and safety tech and a pretty good infotainment system, the Forester is a five-seat CUV that is hard to fault. It’s not nearly as fun as the CX-5 or CR-V, but it’s a tough vehicle you can trust your family to for well over a decade.

All-wheel drive is standard and it has one of the largest cargo spaces in its segment. The 2.5-liter boxer engine makes 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. That engine is good for 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. While the new Ascent might get a lot of love, the Forester is still the Subaru to own. It’s priced below much of the competition. It starts at $24,495.

    2020 Kia Telluride

    Kia Telluride

I reviewed the 2020 Kia Telluride not that long ago. I found it to be one of the best new crossovers on the market. At the time of my review, I didn’t think it was quite as good as the comparable options from Honda and Toyota, but it has grown on me. The vehicle is spacious and comfortable, and a competent people-mover with a competitive price. I struggled with the styling and big-SUV feel of the vehicle, but one thing is clear: people like it and it sells. That’s why you’ll find it here and not the Pilot and Highlander.

The Telluride features seating for eight people, the availability of all-wheel drive, top-notch safety and infotainment technology, and a 3.8-liter V6 engine that makes 291 hp. That engine makes the crossover good for 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. The Telluride can tow up to 5,000 pounds, too. Overall, this is a really nice package, and it has a starting price of $31,890, which is right on par with the competition.

    2020 Ford Escape

    2020 Ford Escape

Ford’s Escape is the best it has ever been. The company completely redesigned the CUV for the 2020 model year, and it looks better and drives better than ever before. It has a Porsche Macan quality to its exterior and the inside is nearly as good. Ford’s interiors are never excellent, but the new Escape does about as good as you’re going to get with a blue oval badge. The infotainment system and safety features are also some of the best.

The Escape comes with either front or all-wheel drive, and a long list of powertrains. This list starts with the 181 hp turbo 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. Then comes a 250 hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Then there is a hybrid and plug-in hybrid version. Both the regular hybrid and the plug-in make a combined 200 hp output thanks to a 2.5-liter engine and an electric motor. The Escape is also slightly more affordable than some of its stiffest competitors, with a starting price of $24,885

    2020 Kia Niro

    2020 kia Niro

I’ve driven Kia’s Niro a few times now, and every time I do, I fall a little more in love with the machine. It’s simply a good CUV. Well, Kia calls it a crossover. I think of it more as a wagon, but regardless of that, the vehicle is comfortable, offers one of the best infotainment systems out there, and a spacious cargo area. It’s not a super-fast or engaging vehicle to drive, but it’s not meant to be. Kia made this CUV for efficiency and ease-of-use, and at that, it excels.

Kia did a mid-cycle refresh of the Niro for 2020 and didn’t change much. That’s because it already has a winning combination. Minor updates were made to the exterior and interior, including optional paddles to the steering wheel to adjust the regenerative braking. The powertrain is a 1.6-liter engine connected to an electric motor for a full power output of 139 hp. Fuel efficiency is 52 mpg city and 49 mpg highway. The plug-in hybrid uses the same setup but offers 26 miles of electric-only range. The Niro EV uses a 201 hp electric motor and has a range of 239 miles. The regular hybrid version of the vehicle has a starting price of $24,590.

    2020 Nissan Rogue

    2020 Nissan rogue

The Nissan Rogue is a model that has sold well for a while now. While sales for Nissan have dipped recently, they still sell a boatload of these crossovers. The Rogue competes with the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5, while it’s not on their level, it’s still quite good, with comfort and ease-of-use being the name of the game here. A fun vehicle to drive, it is not, but this five-passenger people mover will do just that well. It also packs good safety features and infotainment tech, so you won’t be wanting too much in that department.

Available with front or all-wheel drive, the Rogue comes with one engine. That engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 170 hp. The best this engine can muster in the Rogue in terms of fuel economy is 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. Personally, I’m not a ginormous fan of the Rogue but I do feel it is a very good vehicle overall. I’d choose a CR-V or CX-5 over it, but if the Nissan strikes your fancy, I can’t fault you. It has a starting price of $25,300. I do have to note that Nissan has a new Rogue coming, and you may want to think about waiting for it.

    2020 Toyota RAV4

    2020 Nissan rogue

The Toyota RAV4 was one of the vehicles that really kicked the whole crossover craze into motion. My wife owned one of the early 1990s RAV4s, and I know why they took off. They were good to drive and offered a lot of practicality in an interesting package. Fast forward to 2020 and a whole lot has changed, but the winning formula has stayed the same. Toyota gives you a reliable CUV that’s comfortable, practical, and up to date with the latest safety tech and infotainment technology.

The RAV4 has added some updates to the model for 2020 and included a new TRD Off-Road trim. This should entice even more buyers into Toyota’s camp, which is a feat because the RAV4 is already a sales-leader. The model features a 203 hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that powers either the front or all four wheels. There is also a RAV4 Hybrid that uses the same engine and two electric motors. if you have some extra dough, spring for that. It is the best RAV4. The non-hybrid model has a starting price of $25,950, but even the hybrid is affordable at $28,350.

    2020 Hyundai Palisade

    hyundai palisade

The Hyundai Palisade is essentially the Kia Telluride but outfitted for Hyundai’s styling and branding book. So, in a way, I’m double-dipping here. That said, the Palisade is different, and it offers a bit of a different experience. The exterior and interior of the vehicle are a little more sophisticated and elegant than the Telluride, whereas that vehicle has a more squared-off front end and overall exterior. The Palisade still offers excellent space and features, including top-notch infotainment and safety tech.

Under the hood, you shouldn’t be surprised to find a 3.8-liter V6 engine that produces, you guessed it, 291 hp. That power is sent to either the front or all four wheels. On the fuel economy front, the Palisade manages 19 city and 26 on the highway. You’ll find it’s slightly more expensive than its Kia brethren, with a starting price of $31,975.

    2021 Kia Seltos

    2020 Kia Seltos

I just had the Kia Seltos to drive, and it is on sale. It is new. It’s technically a 2021 model, but it’s available now. It is the baby Telluride, and I found it to be quite enjoyable. I’ll have a review up soon, but in the meantime, I have to note that Kia really has this whole crossover thing down. The Seltos was very comfortable and handled really well around town and out on the twisties and the highway. It also offered a simple and easy-to-use infotainment system and safety technology. I found the transmission to be a little gear-hunty and its throttle response a little abrupt but other than that, it’s a true pleasure.

The Seltos gets either a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 147 hp or a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder that makes 175 hp. All-wheel drive is standard, and the CUV manages to pull 27 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. I took the Seltos on a bit of a road trip and found that it can easily achieve those mileage numbers. This is a really nice CUV, and it has a starting price of $21,990.

Here’s another crazy story involving a 2020 Corvette coming on the heels of that C8 Corvette being dropped from a dealer’s two-post lift. This one comes from John Gibson who shared it to the C8 Corvette Owner’s page on Facebook. The new 2020 Corvette owner tells us how he was out for a drive on some “curvy roads” and as he crested a rise in the road, his Stingray was grazed by a motorcyclist coming in the opposite lane!

Lucky for our Corvette owner, he had put the Performance Data Recorder into the mode that automatically records his drives whenever he starts up the car. As the motorcyclist lied to the responding police officer about who was over the yellow line, the PDR recording became the crucial piece of evidence for the accident report.

As for the 2020 Corvette, it took a footpeg to the side-scoop boomerang so that will need to be replaced, but overall it looks like the car escaped any serious damage.

Here is the full account of the story from John Gibson:

It’s just a car. That’s what I keep repeating to myself. Got hit by a guy on a motorcycle today in the Vette. Was doing some fun top off motoring on some curvy roads, came over the top of a hill and two guys on motorcycles were riding on/over the centerline with half their bikes in my lane. I swerved away when I saw them. The first rider’s foot peg hit my “boomerang” side scoop and broke it.

I about lost it because I swerved while cresting the hill. Slid sideways, but fortunately I just learned that the C8 handles well at the edge. Got her back under control and turned around to find the guys on the bikes, see if they were ok, and exchange insurance. Guys on the bikes left the scene. I kept going til I found them down the road at their house. Our stories didn’t mesh so we agreed to have them call the police.

They lied and told the police that I was over the center line and hit them, and that they weren’t over the line! Both guys on the bikes told the officer that. So I asked the officer to go back to the scene and look at my skid marks and for debris that would show where I was at when they hit me.

On the way back to the scene a message popped up on my screen that jogged my memory about an amazing C8 feature “Video Recording Started!” ? I had the automatic PDR video recording feature turned on, and had a video of the whole thing!

I showed it to the officer and he said “yep, they both crossed the line. I’ll add that to the report.” So his insurance will have to pay to fix it. I hope the parts are available. In the end it’s not that bad, I know it’s just a car, and I’m glad that no one was hurt. If I hadn’t swerved I would have hit that biker’s outer frame tubes instead of his foot peg that just rotated around. He could have flown off the bike, hit the nearby trees and died. So thank God everyone was alright.

  • [PICS] The Mid-Engine C8 Corvette is Given a C1 Makeover Complete with Chrome and Coves

[PICS] The Mid-Engine C8 Corvette Given a C1 Makeover Complete with Chrome and Coves

With the longevity of the Corvette model spanning nearly 70 years, there will always be those who love to project the classic design queues of the first Corvettes onto the latest model. But things are a bit different this time around as for the first time, the Corvette has gone mid-engine. Will a 1958 makeover on a C8 Corvette work? We check out this rendering from digital artist wb.artist20 to see what such a mash-up might look like.

The 1958 Corvette featured several changes from the 1957 model which includes the first use of the dual headlights, a non-functional louvered hood, and copious amounts of chrome including the one-year-only twin chrome trunk spears. The ’58 also retains the trademark chrome grill with teeth and the two-tone side coves.

For this retro design to work, the chrome grill and the side coves got to fit in their respective places and for the most part designer Oscar V. does a pretty good job of working those historic elements onto the C8. Even the whitewall tires seem to be at home with the makeover, but where I think it falls apart is trying to wrap the mid-engine with the 1958’s trademark chrome bumpers as well as the trim around the windows and headlights. I like how the rear bumpers wrap around the corners, but the front is just overkill…which is one of the original criticisms of the ’58 when it first appeared.

But the best thing about the project is that the more you look, the more there is to see. The side mirrors are a throwback to the side-mounted versions on the C1s. The wheels feature the same platter-design hubcaps and even chrome door handles were carried over to the mid-engine.

    From wb.artist20 via Instagram:

wb.artist20 ? By popular requests, here’s my attempt at “retrofitting” a C8 Corvette with 1958 C1 elements. I debated on what year model to use and @_frankieklassen01 suggested white walls so it intrigued me not to mention the white cove is definitely super identifiable. Let me know what you think. Btw I don’t care about what the chrome does to weight and aerodynamics! It looks awesome to me! ?

Overall I think this was a fun project and we are looking forward to seeing what the reaction will be from the Corvette purists among us.
