Corvettes for Sale: 1971 Corvette Convertible Was a Former Wedding Present

This classic 1971 Corvette seems to thrive on festive occasions.

For example, about 15 years ago, newlyweds received this Stingray convertible as a wedding present. They drove it a few times but it wound up spending most of the time in storage.

Not surprisingly, they wound up selling it a couple of years ago to the current owner, who planned to restore it but instead bought a house in Florida and has no time for such projects.

Therefore, on Christmas Day 2021, someone else will become the new owner after a no-reserve auction on eBay comes to an end on Saturday.

So far, 43 bids have climbed to $19,200.

On the bright side, this Stingray still has its original 350 engine hooked to a four-speed manual transmission. The owner says it “ran excellent” when he parked it in the garage two years ago, but it will need a new battery after sitting so long. About half of the 21,801 Corvettes built that year came with air conditioning, and fortunately this is one of them.

He says the interior “is all there” and in “pretty good condition.” The frame is described as rust-free, and the body looks “very good with a few cracks here and there.” It’s covered with paint that’s old “but looks good for a driver.” The brakes work, the exhaust looks new, and the tires have “a lot of tread” but definitely need to be replaced due to being 20 years old.

“All in all,” the owner says, his classic ‘Vette is “an excellent car to bring back to its previous glory.” After all, he muses, “where do you find a #’s matching factory air 4spd convertible project these days?”

Corvettes for Sale: 1971 Corvette Yard Find on eBay

This 1971 Corvette Stingray coupe is reminiscent of a Dolly Parton song with its “coat (of paint) of many colors.”

Yes, it’ll take a lot of work to get this early C3 looking like the chrome bumper classic it yearns to be (including those chrome bumpers that have gone AWOL).

But at least a little bit of the heavy lifting has already been done for the new owner of this car currently for sale on eBay out of Northford, Connecticut at the “Buy It Now” price of $7,500.

The seller apparently is a man of few words – 33 to be exact in his listing, but he does say that a rebuilt 454 engine has been installed under the hood and a new exhaust system installed. He candidly admits that he doesn’t know whether that motor is the original matching numbers unit.

He also points out that the front clip is not the right one and in one of the photos it does appear to be from a ’68.

As for the interior, it’s hard to tell exactly what kind of shape it’s in because the radiator is resting on the rear deck and blocks the view. About all we see is the steering wheel and a bare driver’s door panel.

If the frame and birdcage aren’t too rusty, there could be enough room in the price to handle the restoration. What do you think?

While the new C8s are definitely head-turners, there’s nothing like a restored chrome-bumper C3 to turn a few heads.

Take, for example, this stunning 1970 coupe that’s being offered on Craigslist out of the Sioux Falls, South Dakota area at the price of $40,000, or best offer.

Based on the photos that accompany this beauty, there appears to be little work remaining to be done.

Corvettes for Sale: 1970 Corvette is a Tangerine Dream Machine

The original L46 350 V8 engine has given way to a much more powerful small-block GM Performance engine that include heads, intake and radiator all done in aluminum. With a Holley 750 carburetor, MSD Ignition, and Hooker Headers, the engine pumps out an impressive 430 horsepower, according to the seller. It’s hooked to a Muncie four-speed manual transmission, and he’s also installed Wilwood brakes and a new emergency brake system and completely replaced the suspension.

Little wonder, then, that the seller maintains that this vintage C3 “runs and drives amazing.”

The black leather interior is described as “all original” and in “excellent” condition, and the photos appear to back up that declaration. All the gauges work, even the clock, and storage bags for the T-tops and the removable rear window are also included. The car is also one of just 425 produced with shoulder seat belts.

But the real talking point of this car, in our opinion, has to be that outstanding Candy Tangerine paint that appears to be in perfect condition. Coupled with the aggressive aftermarket wheels, big-block hood, front spoiler, and side pipes, the car definitely strikes a menacing pose on the street.

Little wonder that one of the photos shows a large trophy from a car show resting comfortably in the front seat.

As the seller summarizes it, “this car is a real head turner – vary rare and hard to find!”

Corvettes for Sale: 1972 Corvette with 26K Miles

Check out this 1972 chrome bumper Corvette Stingray T-top coupe. It’s a survivor that’s just been brought back to life after being off the road for 10 years.

Now on sale on eBay at the “Buy It Now” price of $24,500, the car has undergone extensive mechanical updates to make it roadworthy again, including all new brakes, calipers/pads/hoses, points, a three-row aluminum radiator and hoses, power steering cylinder and hoses, master cylinder, tires, rally wheel trim rings, center caps, rubber floor mats, and battery.

Now the seller says this California car – back in “good mechanical condition” now – drives, steers, shifts and stops great and is a lot of fun to drive with its matching-numbers 350 engine and four-speed manual transmission.

There is still work to be done, however. For starters, the radio and tachometer are not functioning and the original windshield wiper door grill is missing though a green grill from a parts car is included. The original interior and carpet is said to be in very good condition with separation on a few seams of the bucket seats.

Corvettes for Sale: 1972 Corvette with 26K Miles

Likewise, while the Ontario Orange paint was resprayed in the ’70s and was recently professionally detailed, the seller admits it still has blemishes, scratches, paint loss, and fading. “It shines up,” he says, “but shows its age.”

Fortunately he describes the body and frame as “very straight, rust-free and solid.”

It all adds up to a vintage Stingray that could be enjoyed as-is or would also be a good candidate for a total restoration, the seller believes.

[VIDEO] Doug Collins Snags Two One-Owner Corvettes With Great Backstories

You’ve got to spare 35 minutes out of your day and watch this video posted by Dennis Collins on his YouTube Channel, Coffee Walk.

In his latest post, Collins and his two kids, Alex and Kelsey, head out to a longtime friend’s house where they wind up buying a trifecta of vehicles from Frank Marino – a 1967 Marina Blue Corvette convertible with factory air, a 1969 white Corvette convertible, and a nice low-mileage white H2 Hummer.

What makes the Corvettes so special is that they’re still considered one-owner vehicles, with Marino never having transferred the titles from the original purchaser.

“We both sold and traded cars back and forth,” Dennis recalls of their relationship, “and he called me this week and said, hey, I am about to retire, and I am going to my ranch, so I’ve got two special Corvettes, and one of them I bought from you, but I don’t remember when.”

    TITLE

Actually, the ’69 exchanged hands between the two men 28 years ago and has remained in top-notch condition ever since, even cranking up without a struggle when Kelsey drove it onto their enclosed trailer after the deal has been sealed.

But it’s the ’67 that is the real star of this video. Be sure to watch the whole post to see Frank’s moving story about how he got the car up and running again so the original owner could ride in it before he passed away from complications due to Agent Orange exposure. After his death about a year later, the owner’s wife showed some pretty slick negotiating skills to sell the car to Marino.

When Collins bought it, the car was covered in dust and had a few bad places in the paint on the driver’s side and a slight separation in the driver’s seat, but remains in remarkably good survivor condition overall, especially the undercarriage that was immaculate for a 54-year-old car. It’s also one of just 3,788 Sting Rays equipped with air conditioning out of a total production run of 22,940 units that year.

    TITLE

Collins & Family head to Marino’s service station, a fixture in Texas for about decades, where they pick up tons of original documentation about the ’67, along with the original well-worn spare tire!

Once they arrive back at their facility, the Collinses continue to be impressed with the ’67.

“What a cool car,” Dennis says. “It’s always nice when the car gets back to the shop and the story gets better instead of getting worse – so this is one of those kind of cars. The longer you look at it, the longer I look at it, the happier I am I bought it. A lot of times you get one back, whoo, why did I buy that?”

Corvettes on Craigslist: 1972 Corvette with the LS5 454 V8 and 58K Original Miles

Looking for a chrome-bumper C3 Corvette that you can drive every day?

You might want to check out this 1972 Stingray currently up for sale on craigslist.org out of the San Ramon area, which is east of San Francisco.

Originality is the best way to describe this blue coupe, which includes the matching-numbers LS5 454/270 horsepower big-block engine that still resides under the hood. With the original 4-speed manual transmission still intact, this car could provide a lot of low-tech fun for a new owner.

Corvettes on Craigslist: 1972 Corvette with the LS5 454 V8 and 58K Original Miles

By the way, horsepower ratings decreased across the board in 1972 because of mandatory emissions-lowering tuning.

The seller describes the car as “not a trailer queen” but points out that it “has always been garaged and pampered” so it remains “in excellent condition inside and out” despite being nearly a half-century old.

Indeed, he claims it could even be an everyday driver if desired as it “starts right up and is very dependable.”

Corvettes on Craigslist: 1972 Corvette with the LS5 454 V8 and 58K Original Miles

While this Stingray retains its brutish 454 engine – one of just 3,913 produced that year at an extra cost of $294.90, it does include its share of options that make it more refined, like power steering, power disc brakes, tilt and tele steering column, and the original AM/FM radio.

There should be plenty of life left in that big block, too, as the car is believed to have covered just 58,450 miles during its lifetime. If you’re still worried, the seller notes that he can put you in touch with a long-time vintage Corvette specialist who has just serviced the car “to give you an unbiased opinion.”

The fiberglass body, meanwhile, appears to be holding up well, and overall the paint is still shiny, though we did notice a few chips on the doors where inconsiderate drivers have dinged it over the years.

The seller notes that the car had not been detailed before the pictures were taken for the listing, and we believe it would have shown much better if he had waited until an ongoing check-up with a mechanic had been completed. Still, the blue leather seats seem to be in acceptable condition, as do the instrumental panel, console, and door panels.

Perhaps most importantly, this California car shows no signs of rust underneath.

Corvettes on Craigslist: 1972 Corvette with the LS5 454 V8 and 58K Original Miles

With the Corvette taking on a more refined GT philosophy through the rest of the third generation, this one represents the end of an era in many ways. The ’72 marked the end of the line for several C3 trademarks, including the front and rear chrome bumpers, removable rear window, and the pop-up windshield wiper door. Only three engine choices were available, the smallest number since 1956, with the standard 350, the small-block LT1, and the big-block LS5. We owned a ’71 LT1 for a couple of years, and while it definitely can’t match the current refinement of the C8, it was still a very enjoyable car in its own way.

About the only thing we’re not sure about with this ’72 is the asking price, which we believe to be way too high at $44,950, considering that it’s not in perfect restored condition. Indeed, we found several other examples well below $30,000.

Corvettes on Craigslist: 1972 Corvette with the LS5 454 V8 and 58K Original Miles

It’s interesting to note that when this car was new, the LS5 wasn’t available for sale in California because Chevy didn’t have time to complete emissions certification of the engine there. California had imposed limits on oxides of nitrogen not applicable to the 49 other states, and while Chevy knew it would indeed pass the testing for California, they decided to drop the LS5 from testing anyway due to a lack of manpower to certify every engine/car combination, especially considering the anticipated low sales figures for the 454. For the performance-minded, however, the 454 does generate a whopping 70 more horsepower than the standard 350 (but only 15 more than the LT1).

Finally, we’ll leave you with a “back in the day” comment about the ’72 Corvette from then race-car driver Tony DeLorenzo: “You can’t get a better overall performance car. I’d be hard-pressed to find a better car for the money than the ‘Vette. It’s just an incredible automobile.”

Does that remind you of any other Corvettes, like, say, the current C8?
