  • [VIDEO] Building a Retro-Bodied C8 Corvette Project in the Driveway

[VIDEO] Building a Retro-Bodied C8 Corvette Project in the Driveway

We first told you back in June about a guy named Jack Wendel who is bravely going where no man has gone before as he began transforming his brand-new C8 Corvette Stingray into something … well, something definitely different than what left the Bowling Green factory a few months ago.

In his latest post on his YouTube channel called ShadeTree Supercar, Wendel gives a peek at all the progress he’s made over the past few months transforming his mid-engine Stingray convertible into his own creation inspired by the C2 Sting Ray.

“The problem is, people see it as a Corvette and I’m destroying something that they consider beautiful. So from that perspective, you know, I kind of understand it,” Wendel told The Drive back in June. “But they’re not seeing the other perspective: I’m building something and I needed a good platform to start with. What better platform is there than the C8 to start with?”

[VIDEO] Building a Retro-Bodied C8 Corvette Project in the Driveway

Indeed, once he’s completed his “masterpiece,” Wendel apparently hopes to offer a similar kit to other Stingray owners, even going so far as to buy two coach building companies to help him with the project.

Recent photos that have been shared recently to the /r/ShittyCarMods subreddit show a barely recognizable C8, with homemade fiberglass body panels, taillights, and cutouts for pop-up headlights, all inspired by the C2 Corvette.

According to GM Authority, the original poster says they’ve known Wendel for 20-plus years and that he’s already built two C5 Corvette convertibles with mods inspired by the C1 Corvette.

[VIDEO] Building a Retro-Bodied C8 Corvette Project in the Driveway

Some enthusiasts would argue that the C8 is close enough to perfection that it doesn’t need any such mods, but it’s Wendel’s money to burn. Still, we can’t help but be a little sad to see a beautiful C8 convertible chopped up in such a drastic fashion, and at least in our opinion, definitely not for the better.

We’ll give the guy credit for having the stones to undertake this project as it caused us to have fits of anxiety just to have the rear bumper removed from our 2020 Stingray to have a high wing spoiler installed!

Besides the retro-flavored body changes, we’re also concerned, like GM Authority, about how the engine is going to stay cool with all the side intake vents and head exchangers covered up with said body changes.

    What’s your opinion of this one-of-a-kind C8?

  • J.D. Powers Names the Corvette Stingray to the List of Best Cars of 2021

J.D. Powers Names the Corvette Stingray to the List of Best Cars of 2021

While Consumer Reports recently gave a bad report on the predicted quality of the new C8 Corvette, placing it on their 10 Least Reliable Cars for 2022, apparently someone forgot to send that memo to the actual owners of Chevy’s mid-engine masterpiece.

In J.D. Power’s annual listing of The Best Cars of 2021, the Corvette was top-ranked in its segment in both quality and overall appeal, joining three other vehicles as the best cars of 2021.

Also on the list were the Cadillac CT5, Genesis G80, and Nissan Maxima.

“When you go shopping for a new car, you naturally want to know which ones are the best,” J.D. Power says. “There are many ways to determine this, but at J.D. Power, we listen to the Voice of the Consumer. That way, our list of the best cars of 2021 is based on what people like you have to say about their new vehicles after they’ve owned them for at least 90 days.”

To produce its two benchmark annual studies, J.D. Power surveys tens of thousands of verified owners to find out what vehicles are like in the real world during the first few months after purchase.

    J.D. Power says:

The Initial Quality Study (IQS) and Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study are excellent research resources when you’re looking for new car ratings. The IQS establishes which models rank highest in quality, while the APEAL Study determines which ones rank highest in overall appeal. In rare instances, a model may rank highest in its segment in both studies. When that happens, you can rest assured the people who own them believe they are the best car to buy.

On Tuesday morning we had reached out to the Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green and confirmed that both shifts were back to work for the first full day of production since a tornado hit the plant on December 11th.

This morning, we’ve doubled back to get the total production count of new Corvettes built yesterday and that number is 124! According to to the C8 Corvette Owners group on Facebook, the plant completed VINs 10,033-10,156.

We are also hearing that the production numbers should be greater today and by Thursday we are hoping to see the plant return to full production of 180+ Corvettes over the course of the two shifts.

Workers at the assembly plant will have Friday off for Christmas Eve as well as the entire next week off for the annual Christmas/New Years’ production break, and then they will return to work on Monday, January 3rd.

Again, we can’t say enough about how appreciative we are of all those who work at the Corvette Assembly Plant and are building our Corvette dream machines. Merry Christmas to all!

  • Rick Hendrick, Call Your Office…

    Rick Hendrick, Call Your Office...

When Rick Hendrick purchased the very first C8 Corvette for $3 million in January 2020, he famously quipped that he’ll never drive it.

Now his dealership in Atlanta, the Number 8 Corvette dealership in the country, is ensuring that some of their customers will never drive the new 2023 Corvette Z06 when it goes on sale in the summer of 2022.

Check out this email from the Rick Hendrick Chevrolet Duluth dealership to a customer on the Corvette Forum who was assured in writing in October 2020 that his only dealer markup fee on the 2023 Corvette Z06 would be a “$749 dealer administration charge.”

Instead, just 13 months later, he is being offered the mandatory option to take an “accessory package” that costs $13,000.

Are we going to watch a great Corvette enthusiast and friend to the Corvette team spend millions of dollars to own the very first 2023 Corvette Z06 at Barrett-Jackson in January, knowing that his dealership in Atlanta is gouging customers who were promised MSRP pricing over a year ago?

It really leaves a bad impression in our opinion…

Is City Chevrolet marking up Z06s? How about any of the other Hendrick Chevy dealerships?

Here is the email from the CorvetteForum.com:

    From: Rick Hendrick Chevrolet Duluth

    To: raduziub
Subject: RE:Re: Re: RE: C8 Z06 dealer tours news & do you still take deposits for the C8 Z06?

Our dealership will be requiring an accessory package with each of our Corvette orders, will include items such as paint protection film, ceramic coating, window tint and a few other items

Total cost for it will likely be ~$13,000

Demand for the new Corvette Z06 is such that shitty dealership practices like this will go unpunished because these cars will be going for $20K over the purchase price on the secondary market anyway. But you can at least hit the dealer in the end with a 1-star rating on their dealership surveys that follow the sale, especially if they promised you MSRP IN WRITING.

We might expect these games from a Joe Schmoe dealership, but a Hendrick dealership pulling this crap? Seriously, screw these dealers…

    UPDATE
Check out this great response from the Hendrick customer who is now saying the dealership’s management has reached out to him and will be making everything right:

WOW, Keith and dear fellow members, thank you for all of your posts and actions!
I’ve just got off the phone with the General Manager from Rick Hendrick in Duluth, GA where I made my deposit in 2020, and I was informed that there was a little mistake and miscommunication from their end.
Because I made my deposit so long in advance, I was grandfathered in for no extra charges, so no, the $13K will not apply to my allocation.
Not sure if that $13K package fee will apply to anybody else that made a deposit recently, or if it is something that is going to be implemented and communicated to all new deposits from a certain date, but I wanted to share right away what I’ve just learned.
Thank you again awesome Corvette Forum Community and best wishes to all!
    Happy Holidays!

ACS Composite Offers Rock Guards and 5VM Side Rockers for C8 Corvette and Their C7 Z06 Front Splitter Fits All C7 Models

Congratulations to those of you out there that own the C7 or C8 Corvette. These Corvettes are among the best that has ever been made and we are sure that you’ll get years of enjoyment from them. While the front engine and mid-engine Corvettes are about as different as they can be, they share many things including the ability to be protected and customized by our friends at ACS Composite.

ACS Composite is a leader in the Corvette aftermarket for providing owners with the highest quality of parts and accessories specifically designed to fit your Corvette. Their current selection of parts and accessories for the C7/C8 includes a number of different spoilers, front splitters, and side rocker panels, plus they offer other enhancements that help protect your investment while you are enjoying your Corvette.

This month we are sharing some of the best-selling products from ACS Composite. We show off the ACS C8 Corvette Rock Guards which are one of the best ways to protect your Corvette from rock chips and road debris, as well as the ACS 5VM Side Rockers for the C8 which also protects your Corvette while making it appear more aggressive. Finally, the ACS C7 Z06 front splitter has been re-engineered to fit your C7 Stingray as well as the Grand Sport and Z06 models.

    C8 Corvette Rock Guards

The C8 Corvette’s beautiful mid-engine design does offer a bit of the traditional “Coke bottle” shape as the Stingray’s rear end is wider to accommodate the larger rear tires as well as offer the ability for the side air intakes to capture as much air as possible. That design also lends itself for the front Michelins to pick up rocks and other road debris and launch it rearward against the side of your car. While costly solutions like paint protection film (PPF) can help minimize the damage to your exterior paint, these new C8 Corvette Rock Guards from ACS Composite offers the ultimate protection to guard your Corvette’s exterior against rocks and other debris.

    C8 Corvette Rock Guards

Utilizing GM’s stock accessory splash guards as a starting point, ACS Composite’s C8 Rock Guards enhances that design for added protection with features that include a wider edge, a bladed shield that helps control rocks and road debris inside the wheel well, and an added downward extension that provides great stopping power front and back.

    C8 Corvette Rock Guards

Manufactured from ACS Composite’s proprietary PC Composite material, your C8 Rock guards are designed to withstand extreme temperatures as well as rock strikes projected by the spinning wheels.

    C8 Corvette Rock Guards

Installation is easy and takes as little as 30 minutes as the C8 Rock Guards use the stock OEM mounting points in the wheel wheels so no drilling or two-sided tape is required. ACS Composite also offers an install video that can be found on the company’s YouTube Channel. The C8 Rock Guards are sold as a set of four (2 front/2 rear) for $499 with Free Shipping included.

5VM Side Rockers for the C8 Corvette

If you are in the camp that loves the aggressive posture of the OEM 5VM C8 side skirts with the signature winglets in front of the rear wheels, ACS Composite has improved upon GM’s design with their ACS 5VM Carbon Flash Rockers for the C8 Corvette. Like the 1VM rockers, ACS has created an undertray extension to the side rockers which offers protection to the rolled painted body panel underneath the C8, and ACS uses a custom-designed rocker bracket that doesn’t require the side hole to be drilled as is the case with the dealer-installed OEM version.

5VM Side Rockers for the C8 Corvette

ACS Composite already offers their own version of the 5VM Front Splitter and these 5VM C8 Rocker Panels in Carbon Flash Metallic will compliment that look. Made from highly durable PC Composite material, the black molded side rockers are heat resistant and with a black substrate, scrapes or rock chips will not show through.

5VM Side Rockers for the C8 Corvette

Similar to the RPO code 5W8, these 5VM C8 side rockers are finished in Carbon Flash Black or CFZ, and it will match all of the C8 Corvette’s exterior accents including the front grille, rear diffuser, the side intake boomerang, and more.

5VM Side Rockers for the C8 Corvette

ACS Composite will begin shipping their 5VM Carbon Flash Black C8 Rockers on September 20th, and a dedicated install video will be coming shortly. The 5VM C8 Side Rockers are priced at $1,948 and free shipping is included.

    ACS C7 Z06 Splitter

General Motors spent a considerable amount of time in aero-testing the C7 Corvette Z06’s aerodynamic kit for the Z07 Performance Package. ACS has taken that Z06/Z07 splitter and redesigned it in CAD and CNC machined it from the ground up with slight improvements over the original design and the end result is a clean-looking, durable, and functional aerodynamic splitter that will benefit the front of your C7 Corvette Stingray as well as the widebody Grand Sport and Z06 models.

    ACS C7 Z06 Splitter

The ACS Z06 Front Splitter is made from PC Composite which is a manufacturing process generally reserved for high-volume production parts. These black molded splitters offer high strength and durability, as well as resistance to heat and scraping which makes them perfect for mounting on the front of your C7 Corvette. If durability is important to you, the ACS Z06 splitter helps minimize curb rash and mild road hazards. ACS describes it as the last Z06 Splitter your Corvette will ever need!

The C7 Z06 Splitter also features an optional undertray for those track warriors looking for the ultimate aerodynamic performance from their cars. The integrated undertray option enhances the aerodynamics by keeping all edges smooth and directing air with a minimum amount of turbulence. The undertray also has revised brake cooling ducts and features extra mounting points with linear fins to keep the air flowing smoothly as possible

    ACS C7 Z06 Splitter

You can further customize the look of your C7 with the addition of the Stage 2 and Stage 3 deflectors. Mounted on the corners of the C7 splitter, the deflectors help to move and reduce the airflow off the ends of the splitter. The Stage 2 deflectors are smaller and more conservative than the larger Stage 3 deflectors, and the OEM deflectors can be used with the ACS C7 Z06 Front Splitter.

    ACS C7 Z06 Splitter

The ACS C7 Z06 Front Splitters are available for the C7 Corvette Stingray as well as the C7 Grand Sport and Z06 models with a starting price of $499.00 and shipping is free! An installation video is also available on the ACS Composite YouTube channel.

Once you’ve seen a C8 Corvette with all the carbon flash components swapped out for beautiful carbon fiber, it’s hard to settle for anything less. The RSC Aero not only makes the C8 look great but RSC’s CFD Testing (Computational Fluid Dynamics) conducted by ex-Formula 1 aerodynamicists showed the RSC Kit increased downforce by ~75% at track speeds of 112MPH over the stock Z51 package aero components with a minimal increase in drag of 7%. RSC has multiple Wings options in the development pipeline that will further reduce drag compared to the splitter (albeit sacrificing the spoiler’s clean look.)

Our friend Peter Chilelli shared another rendering of the new 2023 Corvette Z06, this time choosing to color it in Amplify Orange and adding the Z07 Performance Package aero which can be seen in the form of the front dive planes and the rear wing spoiler.

Peter posted the pic on the MidEngineCorvetteForum.com and he said “Just for fun, I used one of my renders over the top of the GM Camo Z06 in motion photo released this week.
