[PICS] C8 Corvette Coupe vs Convertible Headroom...And The Winner Is?

Discussions regarding the 2020 C8 Corvette’s legroom and headroom have been ongoing since the 7.18.19 Next Generation Corvette Reveal in Tustin, California. I was fortunate enough to have been invited to the Reveal by Mike Furman, and was able to be among the first in the public to actually sit in both the driver and passenger seats that night.

One thing I could immediately tell was that photographs don’t do a very good job conveying the space afforded to the driver and the passenger. Both felt more spacious to me when actually sitting inside the car. As the interior space discussions commenced, many also wondered how well a taller individual would fit inside the cockpit. We’ve since seen and heard from many who are over six feet tall and the headroom is actually quite impressive due to the high degree of seat adjustability.

During my C8 Owners School in June, there were two owners who were over six feet tall. While they both said they normally had plenty of headroom in the C8, they also both indicated that the headroom while wearing a helmet was quite restrictive at their height. It was around the same time that I heard Spring Mountain’s Ron Fellows Performance Driving School might be adding convertible C8s for use in the C8 Owners School for the purpose of improved headroom for taller drivers. During my second C8 Owners School with Mike Furman and 16 of his customers in early October, I again heard that HTCs were being ordered by Spring Mountain for the benefit of additional headroom.

After hearing another report on a YouTube video stating that the HTC actually provides less headroom than the coupe, I decided to take matters into my own hands and measure the headroom in both the C8 Coupe and HTC. The following photographs reveal the truth…and the winner is?

COUPE – Seat Fully Forward, Fully Reclined

    HTC – Headroom View

[PICS] C8 Corvette Coupe vs Convertible Headroom...And The Winner Is?

HTC FTW! And for those in need of interpretation, that’s Hard Top Convertible For The Win!

You can clearly see that the design of the coupe limits the headroom due to the required hardware for securing the Targa top. The practical outcome is an additional two inches of headroom in the HTC. The HTC’s additional headroom is a huge win for taller drivers, especially so during track use when helmets are required.

    HTC FTW!

[PICS] 2020 Corvette Wearing Vertini RFS1.9 Custom Wheels Finished in Brushed Dual Gunmetal

So I was cruising the ‘gram earlier today looking for a suitable subject for #WheelsWednesday when I came across this photo of a Black 2020 Corvette wearing Vertini custom forged wheels.

What struck me about the Vertini RFS1.9 forged wheels is how the spokes resemble blades of a turbine. That design gives the feeling of the Corvette being in motion even while standing still.

I also like the choice of color from the owner (@markoon13). Vertini calls this Brushed Dual Gunmetal and it helps add color to the Black Stingray without going to bright silver or chromies.

    Vertini RFS1.9

The Vertini RSF1.9 wheels are made using the latest German manufacturing process that stretching the wheels with pressurized rollers to the desired sizes. Vertini says the process creates a “lightweight multi-spoke wheels with pleasing aesthetics and aggressive fitments for European, Asian, and American vehicles.” Three levels of concave profiles are available. Two colors are offered with Brushed Dual Bronze joining the Brushed Dual Gunmetal.

The RFS1.9 wheels on this Corvette Stingray are staggered 19×8.5 fronts and 20×11 rears and they each cost $325 and $470 respectively.

Here’s the original post from Vertini Wheels:

Bonus pic! Found this also from Vertini showing the RFS1.9 custom wheels on a Sebring Orange C8 Corvette:

  • [VIDEO] Track Attack Canada Compares the C8 Corvette vs Lamborghini Huracan 580-2

[VIDEO] Track Attack Canada Compares the C8 Corvette vs Lamborghini Huracan 580-2

By now, seemingly everyone on Planet Earth knows how great the new 2020 Corvette Stingray is.

But is Chevy’s hot new mid-engine ‘Vette a true supercar?

Colin Caissie of Track Attack Canada recently set out to find out for himself when he pitted the all-new C8 against a 2016 Lamborghini 580-2 in a variety of tests.

Despite giving up about 100 horsepower to the V10 Lambo and at a third of the cost (the Lambo cost $240,000), the Corvette was able to emerge as the winner in several portions of the competition and kept it close in the losses.

[VIDEO] Track Attack Canada Compares the C8 Corvette vs Lamborghini Huracan 580-2

For example, in the Timed Auto Slalom Run, the Corvette won with a time of 41.35 versus the 41.56 of the Huracan.

The Lamborghini rebounded to win the Standing Quarter Mile and the Roll Race, though the difference was tight in both cases.

To conclude the competition, the Corvette rallied to record the best Timed Hot Lap at 1:16.9, nearly a second faster than the Huracan’s 1:17.8.

“I’m pretty excited – that’s pretty cool,” said Matt Stokes, GM Canada Marketing Segment Manager, who attended a showing of the videos recapping the competition. “That’s a big car to take down, and for this to be the first model year and technically the base model of the C8 – to be competing at a level like that, and not only compete but taking down a Lamborghini, it shows how truly impressive this car is.”

[VIDEO] Track Attack Canada Compares the C8 Corvette vs Lamborghini Huracan 580-2

Caissie, who drove the cars during the competition, agreed.

“This is a very, very impressive sports car,” he said of the Stingray, which was equipped with the Z51 performance package.

“In the Lamborghini’s defense, though, the brakes did start to die not even two laps into my hot laps, so the data we recorded (earlier) did show the Lambo was quite a bit quicker than the Corvette,” he added. “But unfortunately with them dying so quickly, you can’t pull time out if you can’t use the brakes.”

That being said, however, Caissie admitted that the overall outcome was a testament to the Corvette.

“We did quite a few hot laps with the Corvette,” he said. “We drove around all day filming, and you know what, this thing was a champ. Not at any point throughout the day did it show any signs of wear and tear, brake fading, like nothing. The car held up to everything we put it through and just smiled the whole while doing it and obviously put down an impressive time as well.”

[VIDEO] Track Attack Canada Compares the C8 Corvette vs Lamborghini Huracan 580-2

Still, Caissie says he’s not “super convinced” that the new Corvette is really a supercar, though he conceded as a performance sports car, “this thing is King of the Hill. I’m convinced bang for the buck, this thing is the way to go.”

Overall, he believes the Z51 is “pretty much the ultimate sports car on Planet Earth right now. For what you pay and what you get, there simply is not a better value.”

Perhaps Caissie is reluctant to raise the entry-level model of the Corvette to such lofty status.

“In my opinion, this is not a true supercar … not yet,” he said.

Like so many of us, he remains curious to see what the Z06 and other higher-performance models will be like, and they “might change my mind,” he concedes.

QUICK SHIFTS: C8 vs 911 vs GT500, Daily Driver C8, BMW M3, Tesla Goes Plaid, C4 vs Nissan 300ZX, and More!

Welcome to another fun-filled edition of Quick Shifts! Quick Shifts is a content feature here at CorvetteBlogger featuring links to Corvette and automotive-related stories of interest. The content that we have hand-selected for you this week includes a C8 vs. 911 and GT500 comparison test, daily driving a C8, the new M3, the Model S going Plaid, the C4 taking on the 300ZX Turbo, and more!

    FIRST GEAR:

Edmunds own C8 Corvette has been the gift that keeps giving since they purchased it a couple of weeks ago! The most recent adventure that Carlos Lago has roped the Rapid Blue mid-engine marvel into sees it face off with rivals of both domestic and international flavors. As we’ve come to expect, the other American in the test is the 760 HP Shelby GT500 (seen here in Twister Orange, a great complement to the ‘Vette’s hue) and, while other publications have opted to pit the Stingray against the Cayman GT4, Carlos and Co. went the traditional route by sourcing a 911 for German representation. See how our hero fares by clicking here.

    SECOND GEAR:

The Drive’s Jerry Perez seems to have had a similar idea as he announced this week that he will be replacing his daily-driven Civic with a new Stingray (with body-colored vents!) for a short period of time. He will be suffering through this hardship in the name of science, and unlike most other reviews that we’ve seen almost weekly for a year now, Jerry will be focusing on how well the C8 does “normal car things” and he wants YOUR help! From the article: “this will involve taking my kid to school, going to the grocery store, running all kinds of errands, and parking a supercar-looking sports car on the street… I have to ask: what do you want to know about the new Stingray?” There is still some time to chime in and see what questions you can get answered by going to thedrive.com.

    THIRD GEAR:

Outside of our immediate interest group, the big news of the week was the official unveiling of the next-generation of the legendary BMW M3 and its two-door M4 sibling. The important specs are (up to) 503 HP, a manual transmission, and even a first-ever wagon variant, but the biggest news is its controversial styling. It led many to wonder if it is the ugliest BMW of all time and renders of how it “should” have looked popped up online almost immediately. Personally though, for C6 Z06-rivaling power in a six-speed wagon with a killer green paint job, I’d be willing to forgive any number of exterior deformities!

    FOURTH GEAR:

As difficult as it is for your humble author to care about anything in the EV sector, regardless of how impressive it looks on paper, I’d be remiss if I didn’t also mention the news that came out of Tesla’s annual “battery day” celebration. Along with promising a $25,000 car in about three years, the big announcement from battery day was the addition of a 1,100 HP “Plaid” version to the Model S lineup. The working prototypes of the Plaid are astonishingly quick! Elon Musk is claiming a sub-two-second sprint to 60 mph and a quarter-mile E.T. of under nine ticks. It can corner too! Musk released an onboard video of the Plaid running Laguna Seca through Tesla’s official Twitter account, and, at 1:30.4, its time around the famed circuit was faster than the one posted by the C7 ZR1 (though, we have to point out that we still don’t believe that Randy Pobst and Motor Trend gave the ZR1 a fair shake at Best Driver’s Car 2019, where the ZR1’s official time came from!). For fellow devotees to internal combustion, McLaren will wrap up our forward gears with some statistics of their own. The British automaker announced this week that their bonkers new 765LT can run from 0 to 124 mph (200 kph) in 7 seconds flat and cover 1,320 feet in under 10 seconds. While this doesn’t sound overly impressive next to the Tesla’s dipping into the 8’s, it isn’t too shabby (it is remarkable, actually) for a rear-wheel-driver that has to (has the joy of) rev to make its power and torque. We are eagerly awaiting the 765’s turn at Laguna Seca, it should be hot on the heels of its outrageously priced, record-holding sibling!

    REVERSE:

As they have many times since the pandemic (COVID, not C8 Fever) hit, our friends at Car and Driver took care of Reverse for us by posting an excellent throwback Corvette piece this week. Spurred by the exciting Nissan 400Z reveal last week, C&D took us back 30 years for a look at how the Z car’s ancestor stacked up against the contemporaneous carrier of the crossed flags. See what the great John Phillips thought of the two cars right here and take a moment to appreciate how fortunate Corvette fans are to have had four different and wonderful incarnations of their favorite car since this test was written. Z (and ZX) aficionados definitely haven’t been so lucky! It is also worth reflecting upon just how stellar America’s sports car has become, even in base trim. The Plastic Fantastic has come so far that to recreate these old tests (vs. the Z or Supra) would seem silly. Chevrolet has progressed their halo car beyond the simple realm of the sports car, into a whole new league, without allowing the price to get out of hand. Thank you for sticking with it, GM! It is an incredible time to love Corvettes!

    Overdrive:

Since there aren’t any 5-speed Corvettes, we had to turn to one of the old “Doug Nash’s” overdrive gears for a bonus selection that has been knocking on the QS door for a couple of weeks. Recently, Motor Trend offered up a fun activity that a friend and I once attempted for our native Colorado. The object of the game is to come up with vehicles that share their name with a professional sports franchise (or a locale in the Centennial state in my version). Grab a notepad (or iPad) and jot down as many as you can think of before peeking at MT’s official list here.

Here is what we came up with for the Colorado-specific version of the game too, if you are curious:

Locations: Chevy Colorado, Kia Telluride, Chrysler Aspen, AMC Eagle or Eagle Talon (Eagle is a lesser known town by Vail on i70), and the Sterling 825 (another town, on the way to Nebraska).

Teams: Ford Bronco, Chevrolet Avalanche, the Ford Nugget (a new transit camper van!), the Skoda Rapid (had to look that one up after my buddy reminded me that we have a MLS team), and a couple of college representatives; the Ford (Air Force) Falcon and the (Colorado State) Ram 1500. Can you think of any that we (or MT) missed? Does your state have even more cars with shared names than mine? Sound off in the comment section and, until next time, stay classy, Corvette Nation!

  • RUMOR: Electric All-Wheel-Drive Hybrid Coming to the C8 Corvette As Early As 2023

RUMOR: Electric All-Wheel-Drive Hybrid Coming to the C8 Corvette

Speculation has been rampant for years that the C8 Corvette would feature an electric version.

Now GM-Trucks.com is reporting that it has exclusively reviewed documents indicating electric all-wheel-drive (eAWD) will be an option on the Stingray coupe and convertible versions as soon as the 2023 model year, though the pandemic may have slowed down the development enough that the feature may not arrive until 2024.

Either way, this is a game-changing move for the mid-engine Corvette, which is already capable of 0-60 times under 3 seconds. Imagine the added torque that would be provided by one or two electric motors providing juice to the front wheels.

“In theory, a Corvette with eAWD would be a hybrid,” GM-Trucks.com reports. “That’s not how Chevy will market it. The feature will most certainly be performance-oriented.”

One drawback to the addition of electric motors is that the frunk would likely have to be used to hold a battery instead of its current role as storage.

This “electrifying” news for Corvette is no surprise since GM recently said future Corvette engineering has been merged into the EV & Autonomous Program, plus the fact that “silent” prototypes have already been spotted by journalists and enthusiasts in Michigan.

“We’re unsure how eAWD fits into an all-electric C8 Corvette,” GM-Trucks.com writes. “It’s entirely possible the eAWD Corvette could move independently of the rear wheels and V8 engine… and in theory travel silently. They could be different cars entirely…or the same feature described by many people.”

The website also believes that GM’s Ultium Battery system will provide power for any electric or hybrid Corvette, which they believe would have a plug-in cord for recharging.

Despite being a track-oriented website, GM-Trucks.com had previously shared tidbits of the mid-engine Corvette back in early 2019 showing the start-up animation that would appear on the 2020 Corvette.

  • [VIDEO] Corvette Assembly Plant Running Ahead of Target Production Schedule

[VIDEO] Corvette Assembly Plant Running One Week Ahead of Target Production

Our friend Morgan Crosbie who is a Chevy sales rep at Ontario’s Finch Chevrolet has a new video up on his Cars and Crosbie YouTube Channel today and while the main thrust is to offer a comparison of the 2020 Corvette 1LT vs his personal loaded 3LT Z51 Coupe. But before he gets into that, he offers some much welcome updates on the production of his customer cars at the Corvette Assembly Plant.

Morgan tells is that the 1LT Coupe behind him is VIN 3963 and it was produced some two weeks ago. With the quality control holds shortened now, Morgan says he is happy to see many of the details have been fine-tuned and that they are ironing out some of the kinks as had been reported previously.

He is also very excited as his customer cars that had a Target Production Week (TPW) of July 13 have already been produced, which means that the Assembly Plant is running a a week ahead of schedule in terms of producing the vehicles they determined were going to be produced at a later date. As a representative of Chevrolet, he is happy to be able to report to his customers that their cars were already built.

[VIDEO] Corvette Assembly Plant Running Ahead of Target Production Schedule

From there, Morgan offers a walk-around of the 1LT car which he calls a “stylish cruiser” as it doesn’t have the Z51 option. In fact, the Arctic White Stingray has just two options, the Sterling Silver Trident wheels and the NPP Performance exhaust. He also calls the Arctic White a “value” color as there is no upcharge for the paint.

Morgan also points out the fact that the non-Z51 cars come with the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires which he says will be more durable and should last longer than the Pilot Sport 4S summer tires found on the Z51 models.

The Chevy sales rep is also quick to point out that for customers who do get the base model, you are no way making any a sacrifices that are too monumental for you to think that its a different vehicle from the upper-level trim and performance models that are being tested by the auto magazines and tv shows. During his walk-around, he points out many of the value details that don’t detract from the Corvette ownership experience.

As always, Morgan offers a solid review so check out the full video if you are looking to build you own “value cruiser.”

From Cars and Crosbie via YouTube:

In this episode I show you the value that you get in a base model Corvette and why it is important to have a corvette specialist to help you design and order your Corvette.

  • [ACCIDENT] 2020 Corvette Grazed by a Motorcyclist Who Crossed the Yellow Line

[ACCIDENT] 2020 Corvette Grazed by a Motorcyclist Who Crossed the Yellow Line border=

Here’s another crazy story involving a 2020 Corvette coming on the heels of that C8 Corvette being dropped from a dealer’s two-post lift. This one comes from John Gibson who shared it to the C8 Corvette Owner’s page on Facebook. The new 2020 Corvette owner tells us how he was out for a drive on some “curvy roads” and as he crested a rise in the road, his Stingray was grazed by a motorcyclist coming in the opposite lane!

Lucky for our Corvette owner, he had put the Performance Data Recorder into the mode that automatically records his drives whenever he starts up the car. As the motorcyclist lied to the responding police officer about who was over the yellow line, the PDR recording became the crucial piece of evidence for the accident report.

As for the 2020 Corvette, it took a footpeg to the side-scoop boomerang so that will need to be replaced, but overall it looks like the car escaped any serious damage.

    [embedded content]

Here is the full account of the story from John Gibson:

It’s just a car. That’s what I keep repeating to myself. Got hit by a guy on a motorcycle today in the Vette. Was doing some fun top off motoring on some curvy roads, came over the top of a hill and two guys on motorcycles were riding on/over the centerline with half their bikes in my lane. I swerved away when I saw them. The first rider’s foot peg hit my “boomerang” side scoop and broke it.

I about lost it because I swerved while cresting the hill. Slid sideways, but fortunately I just learned that the C8 handles well at the edge. Got her back under control and turned around to find the guys on the bikes, see if they were ok, and exchange insurance. Guys on the bikes left the scene. I kept going til I found them down the road at their house. Our stories didn’t mesh so we agreed to have them call the police.

[ACCIDENT] 2020 Corvette Grazed by a Motorcyclist Who Crossed the Yellow Line
[ACCIDENT] 2020 Corvette Grazed by a Motorcyclist Who Crossed the Yellow Line

They lied and told the police that I was over the center line and hit them, and that they weren’t over the line! Both guys on the bikes told the officer that. So I asked the officer to go back to the scene and look at my skid marks and for debris that would show where I was at when they hit me.

On the way back to the scene a message popped up on my screen that jogged my memory about an amazing C8 feature “Video Recording Started!” ? I had the automatic PDR video recording feature turned on, and had a video of the whole thing!

I showed it to the officer and he said “yep, they both crossed the line. I’ll add that to the report.” So his insurance will have to pay to fix it. I hope the parts are available. In the end it’s not that bad, I know it’s just a car, and I’m glad that no one was hurt. If I hadn’t swerved I would have hit that biker’s outer frame tubes instead of his foot peg that just rotated around. He could have flown off the bike, hit the nearby trees and died. So thank God everyone was alright.

[PICS] The Mid-Engine C8 Corvette Given a C1 Makeover Complete with Chrome and Coves

With the longevity of the Corvette model spanning nearly 70 years, there will always be those who love to project the classic design queues of the first Corvettes onto the latest model. But things are a bit different this time around as for the first time, the Corvette has gone mid-engine. Will a 1958 makeover on a C8 Corvette work? We check out this rendering from digital artist wb.artist20 to see what such a mash-up might look like.

The 1958 Corvette featured several changes from the 1957 model which includes the first use of the dual headlights, a non-functional louvered hood, and copious amounts of chrome including the one-year-only twin chrome trunk spears. The ’58 also retains the trademark chrome grill with teeth and the two-tone side coves.

For this retro design to work, the chrome grill and the side coves got to fit in their respective places and for the most part designer Oscar V. does a pretty good job of working those historic elements onto the C8. Even the whitewall tires seem to be at home with the makeover, but where I think it falls apart is trying to wrap the mid-engine with the 1958’s trademark chrome bumpers as well as the trim around the windows and headlights. I like how the rear bumpers wrap around the corners, but the front is just overkill…which is one of the original criticisms of the ’58 when it first appeared.

But the best thing about the project is that the more you look, the more there is to see. The side mirrors are a throwback to the side-mounted versions on the C1s. The wheels feature the same platter-design hubcaps and even chrome door handles were carried over to the mid-engine.

wb.artist20 ? By popular requests, here’s my attempt at “retrofitting” a C8 Corvette with 1958 C1 elements. I debated on what year model to use and @_frankieklassen01 suggested white walls so it intrigued me not to mention the white cove is definitely super identifiable. Let me know what you think. Btw I don’t care about what the chrome does to weight and aerodynamics! It looks awesome to me! ?

Overall I think this was a fun project and we are looking forward to seeing what the reaction will be from the Corvette purists among us.
